Purpose of Health Screening

Routine health screenings serve several key purposes in proactive health management:

  • Early Detection: To identify potential health conditions, such as hypertension, diabetes, or high cholesterol, before symptoms develop.

  • Baseline Establishment: To create a record of an individual's health metrics for future comparison.

  • Condition Monitoring: To track the status of existing health conditions and the effectiveness of management plans.

  • Risk Assessment: To evaluate an individual's health risks based on lifestyle factors, family history, and current physiological data.

Standard Components of a Full Body Checkup

A comprehensive health screening package in Singapore typically includes the following core components:

  • Physical Examination: Measurement of height, weight, Body Mass Index (BMI), and blood pressure.

  • Blood Tests:

    • Complete Blood Count (CBC) to assess overall health and detect disorders.

    • Lipid Panel to measure cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

    • Blood Glucose tests to screen for diabetes.

    • Liver Function Tests (LFT) and Renal Function Tests (RFT).

  • Urinalysis: Analysis of urine to detect indicators of kidney function and metabolic disorders.

  • Cardiac Assessment: Electrocardiogram (ECG) to evaluate heart rate and rhythm.

  • Imaging Studies: Chest X-ray to assess the health of the lungs and heart.

  • Endoscopy (gastroscopy and colonoscopy). In Singapore, Ministry of Health (MOH) and Health Promotion Board guidelines recommend routine colorectal cancer screening via colonoscopy starting at age 50. For average-risk individuals, typically every 5-10 years. High-risk individuals (e.g., family history) should start earlier, often 10 years before the earliest relative's diagnosis, while upper endoscopy (OGD) is recommended for symptoms or screening in specific higher-risk cases.

Additional Tests Based on Profile

Depending on age, gender, and individual risk factors, additional tests may be recommended:

  • Age and Gender-Specific Tests: Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) testing for men, and bone density scans (DEXA) for postmenopausal women.

  • Lifestyle-Based Tests: Stress tests or more advanced cardiac screening for individuals with specific risk factors like smoking or a strong family history of heart disease.

  • Follow-up Tests: Further diagnostic investigations, such as ultrasound scans or more specific blood panels, may be advised based on initial findings.
